Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of October 5-7, 2012. Brace yourselves; there’s a lot.
1. First Friday: Photo Ops at the Mall

When: Friday all day and throughout October
Where: The Winslow Mall
Why: There are many reasons you might want to have your picture taken in front of one of the four photo op boards painted by local artists and set up in the Winslow Mall. One reason that comes immediately to mind is that this year you could send out Halloween or Autumn Cards instead of Holiday cards. If you can’t make it this weekend, no worries. The boards will be up for the entire month.
2. Bainbridge Island Solar Tour
When: Friday, 1-4 p.m.
Where: City Council Chambers
Why: Learn how solar energy works in the Pacific Northwest and get your questions answered about the island’s first Community Solar Project.
3. Main Street

When: Friday, 5 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts and Crafts Gallery, 151 Winslow Way E.
Why: Come see artists’ interpretations of Main Streets in Poulsbo, Eastern Washington, Taos, Bremerton, and Rome and on Vashon Island. Of course on Bainbridge too! Artists include Cameron Bahnson, Michael Frey, Raymond Gendreau, Gretchen Hancock, Mary McInnis, Colleen Meacham, Gerry Newcomb, Joel Sackett, Luke Tornatzky, Diane Walker, Kay Walsh, and Barbara Wilson.
4. BPA Gallery First Fridays Art Walk: Visions on a Blue Planet
Boatside by Elon and Bradbury
When: Friday 5-7 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North
Why: See the photographs of Isaac Elon and Shari Bradbury.
5. Grand Opening of Lark Bainbridge
When: Saturday and Sunday, 1o a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: 104 Madison Avenue
Why: Fresh retail “meat” on the Island. What’s this mysterious new store? Go find out and sample the Bella Cucina food line and Nespresso while you’re there. (I don’t know what those are either. Let’s find out!)
6. Carnival at The Island School
When: Saturday, 12-4 p.m.
Where: The Island School, 8553 Day Road
Why: The Island School carnival is always fun, featuring BBQ lunch, the ever popular cake walk (where everyone wins eventually), games for kids, the awesome dunk-a-kid booth, the silly string corral, the used book sale, and the dramatic Chicken Drop (a personal favorite. Don’t worry: No chickens are harmed or actually dropped in this activity.). Plus there’s live music: Blacklight (rock it, kids), the Ovation! Voce’ show choir, and Contagion. Admission is free but you pay for activities and food.
7. Artist Demo: Barbara Wilson: Painting on the iPad
When: Saturday, 12:30 p.m.
Where: BAC Gallery
Why: This free demo will show you how to use that thing that you’re not sure you should have bought because it’s kind of like a computer and kind of like a phone but is actually neither. So now you know that, in fact, it is a canvas!
8. Family Pajama Movie Night
When: Saturday, 6:45-9 p.m.
Where: Congregation Kol Shalom, 9010 Miller Road
Why: Watch a movie (Despicable Me), eat (concessions for sale at the event), and then go home and straight to bed, no need to change your clothes. Don’t forget the sleeping bags.
$10 donation per family.
9. Birding Trip
When: Sunday, 8-9:30 a.m.
Where: Fort Ward Park, 2241 Pleasant Beach Drive NE.
Why: Did you know we were on the Great Washington State Birding Trail? I didn’t. Birder Expert George Gerdts will lead a birding trip at Fort Ward Park.

10. AlderDash
When: Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Where: IslandWood 4450 Blakely Ave NE.
Why:
- You can run short, 3 miles, or long, 6 or 13.1 miles.
- Hydration opps.
- Inspiration Stations along the course.
- Family-friendly activities.
- Sustainably prepared food.
- Live music!

11. BI/NK CROP Hunger Walk
When: Sunday, 1:30 p.m.
Where: Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, 105 Winslow Way W.
Why: Walk to raise money for local charities. Twenty percent of the funds earned each year by the BI/NK CROP Hunger Walk go to Helpline House of Bainbridge.

12. Amigos de las Américas
When: Sunday, 3-4 p.m.
Where: Hyla Middle School, 7861 Bucklin Hill Rd. NE
Why: Amigos de las Américas is looking for motivated high school or college-age students 16 or over with two years of high school Spanish (completed by the summer of 2013). This information session will tell you what you need to know about the program.

13. A Not So Still Life: The Ginny Ruffner Story
When: Sunday, 4 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art auditorium.
Why: Get an early look at a Celluloid Bainbridge Film festival entry followed by Q&A with the filmmaker, who happens to be a former Islander, and her subject, Ginny Ruffner. Proceeds from the event benefit Celluloid Bainbridge.
